United States Courthouse, Los Angeles
For the Federal Courthouse design build competition, held by the General Services Administration, the design envisions a visual identity representational of the stature of a federal court and develops a strong dialogue with the civic center of downtown Los Angeles. The form of the building takes cues from the Doric columns set on the porch of the US Supreme Court and is crowned with a form that creates a dialogue with the tower of City Hall; the courthouse inverts the pyramid form of City Hall’s top. The triangular form of the building is inspired by the balance of power between the three tiers of the judicial system.
