Math and Science Building
The new facility consolidates the largest and fastest growing disciplines at Santa Monica College – mathematics and science – in a single building to encourage interdisciplinary collaboration. The 110,000 SF building includes interactive classrooms, science laboratories, library space, a planetarium and a rooftop observatory.
The new building serves as a gateway from the community and crossroad on the campus. The classroom and research spaces spiral around a central courtyard, and the wings extend in gentle arcs deep into the heart of the campus, framing a diverse array of outdoor spaces, including a new science quad. Much of the indoor space is lifted above the ground on pilotis, to facilitate pedestrian movement under and through and around the building. Taking full advantage of the Southern California climate, the building is wrapped in a channel glass façade to contribute to student wellness with natural light in all learning areas.
